Yuri Afonkin was born in Leningrad in 1978. In 2002 he graduated from the St Petersburg Conservatoire (class of Professor V. I. Stopichev). From 1996-1999 he has a soloist with the St Petersburg Academic Glinka Capella Orchestra. Since 2000 he has been leader of the Mariinsky Theatre Full Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, he has regularly performed with the St Petersburg State Academic Capella and with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. Regularly performs recitals both in Russia and abroad.
