Gleb Filshtinsky

Lighting Designer

Born in Leningrad. Graduated from the stage direction faculty of the St Petersburg Academy of Theatrical Art, specialising in theatre set design.
Has worked as a lighting designer on over 190 music and drama productions in Russia and abroad. Has created the lighting for numerous show programmes and light and pyrotechnic shows. Over the years, he has worked as principal lighting designer with the St Petersburg Theatre of Youth Art, the St Petersburg Bryantsev Young Spectators? Theatre, the St Petersburg Drama and Comedy Theatre on Liteiny and the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre.
In 1996, together with Yevgeny Ginsburg, he established the creative workshop Lighting for Theatre.

Gleb Filshtinsky?s works have been awarded numerous prizes, among them:
• the Latvian National Prize for Theatre (Teresa Racken, Dailas Theatre, Riga, 1996),
•the St Petersburg STS TV channel prize (The Little Chestnut Tree, St Petersburg Drama and Comedy Theatre on Liteiny, 1997),
•the St Petersburg Teatral society prize (Lost in the Stars, St Petersburg Drama and Comedy Theatre on Liteiny and Fedra, St Petersburg Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre, 2000),
•the National Prize of Estonia for Theatre (Fathers and Sons, Drama Theatre, Tallinn, 2003),
• the Golden Mask, Russia?s highest theatre prize (The Rake?s Progress, Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow, 2004).

Currently works with both the Mariinsky and the Alexandrinsky Theatres. His most recent works at the Mariinsky Theatre include The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia (Musical Director and Conductor: Valery Gergiev; Stage Director and Designer: Dmitry Chernyakov, 2001), Otello (Musical Director and Conductor: Valery Gergiev; Stage Director: Yuri Alexandrov, 2001), Boris Godunov (Musical Director: Valery Gergiev; Stage Director: Viktor Kramer, 2002), Der Ring des Nibelungen (Artistic Supervisor of the productions: Valery Gergiev, 2002-2003), The Nose and The Tsar?s Bride (Musical Director and Conductor: Valery Gergiev; Stage Director: Yuri Alexandrov, 2004), The Snow Maiden (Musical Director and Conductor: Valery Gergiev; Stage Director: Alexander Galibin, 2004), Carmen (Musical Director and Conductor: Valery Gergiev; Stage Director: Alexei Stepanyuk, 2005) and Tristan und Isolde (Musical Director and Conductor: Valery Gergiev; Stage Director: Dmitry Chernyakov, 2005).

Member of the Union of Theatre Workers of Russia and the All-Russian Association of Lighting Designers.
