Paul Pyant

Lighting Designer
Paul Pyant is a graduate and associate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. From 1974 to 1987 he collaborated with the Glyndebourne Opera; lighting credits there include Le nozze di Figaro, Death in Venice and Falstaff. His most recent credits include The Queen of Spades (Metropolitan Opera, New York), Don Pasquale and Il trovatore (Los Angeles Music Center Opera), Le nozze di Figaro (Wiener Staatsoper), Stiffelio (La Scala, Milan), L’elisir d’amore (Grand Thйвtre de Gйnиve and Teatro Real, Madrid) and Der Fliegende Hollдnder (Houston Grand Opera) among others. His opera credits for English National Opera since 1985 include the most recent being Khovanshchina, Salome and Orfeo ed Euridice. His works for the Royal Opera at Covent Garden include the award-winning productions of Sir Gawain and Stiffelio. He has also worked in ballet, principally with English National Ballet (The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and The Nutcracker) and Northern Ballet Theatre (Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake). Paul Pyant’s drama theatre works includes The Wind in the Willows (Olivier Award nomination for “Best Lighting”), The Madness of George III (London and world tour), Arcadia (London and New York) and Carousel (London and New York: Critics Circle Award for “Best Lighting” and “Drama Desk” nominee). He has worked in Tokyo and the USA (Los Angeles Ovation Award nomination) and on Troilus and Cressida and Candide (Royal National Theatre in London). For the Royal Shakespeare Company he has designed Richard III, The Tempest, Painter of Dishonour and Julius Caesar.
