Ian first joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1975, and recent work at Stratford and London includes: The Wizard Of Oz, The Comedy Of Errors, Loves Labours Lost, Twelfth Night, A Christmas Carol, The Relapse, Troilus And Cressida and The Merry Wives Of Windsor.

Other directing credits include: The Rivals and King Lear at the Old Vic; The Orchestra at the Kingґs Head; Friends Of Dorothy and How Lucky Can You Get, Donmar Warehouse, London; Banana Ridge and Peter Pan, Shaw Festival, Canada; Henry The Eighth and Love For Love for Chichester Festival Theatre.

Musicals include: Oh Kay!, Chichester Festival Theatre; The Swan-Down Gloves for the RSC; Merrily We Roll Along, Guildhall Theatre, Barbican, and Bloomsbury Theatre, London; Bitter Sweet, New Sadlerґs Well Opera; A Little Night Music for Chichester Festival Theatre and Piccadilly Theatre, London; Show Boat for the RSC and Opera North, also at the London Palladium, and West Side Story in Melbourne/Adelaide and Sydney.

Recent work includes La bohиme (Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg, Russia); The Mikado for DґOyly Carte Opera Company (Savoy Theatre, London); revivals of Faust for Opera Queensland Brisbane and Opera Australia, Sydney, Falstaff with Sir John Eliot Gardiner at Baden Baden Festival and the Royal Albert Hall, London; Simon Boccanegra (1881) for The Washington Opera, Les Contes DґHoffmann, for Houston Grand Opera, Mephistopheles for English National Opera, and Shakespeareґs Macbeth for the Sydney Theatre Company.
